This week, the Year 5s from Barnes Primary School visited the CLC to learn about the internet and to make films about what they discovered.

To start the day off, pupils drew what they thought the internet looked like. We had some amazingly varied and creative responses, ranging from lists of numbers to a big brain containing the words ‘I KNOW EVERYTHING’.

After putting together a map of the internet, it was time to to recreate the submarine cable network, with pupils using themselves (holding onto wires, hands and occasionally ears) to represent the countries connected to the internet via this amazing global system.

After lunch, pupils had a go at being computer programmers, using html code to plan their films. Tricky coding proved no match for these Year 5s:

The children were then ready to turn into film-directors, as they turned everything that they had learned that day into a movie using images and their very own voiceovers. I’m sure that you’ll agree that some of them sound just like professional newsreaders!

We at the CLC had lots of fun programming Bee Bots and designing games with year two students from Henry Cavendish Streatham. Here’s what they had to say about it.

“At the CLC, we had a great time making treasure maps. We drew on lots of obstacles such as dragons, crocodile pits and sea monsters for our Beebots to avoid. We pressed the buttons to make them go forward, left, right and backwards. I was so happy when my Beebot got the treasure. In the afternoon we designed our own computer games. We designed or own character and had to collect prizes. It was really cool!”

This term London CLC welcomed year 5 and 6 pupils from Sudbourne school, who showed off their talents as engineers, programmers and game developers.

The first task of the day was to put together a set of components including a Raspberry Pi to create a working computer. Pupils had to understand the function of each piece of equipment to work out how to connect it. They then had to type in the correct command to start up their computers.

Last week year 4 students from Macaulay CE school gave our new 3D printer a spin and produced Tudor medallions inspired by their work on Henry VIII.

My experience at Lambeth CLC was magnificent. I cannot emphasise enough what fabulous support the team provide children and families in the local area – what a brilliant service Lambeth CLC offers the community! Everyone is extremely welcoming and approachable. There is a tangible community spirit; an ethos of inclusion and kindness pervades a friendly and inviting environment in which to learn and work. A wonderful team of dedicated, creative and caring staff make learning fun, stimulating and interactive. Being a part of the team was a joy. I will miss working there.

I came to Lambeth CLC for a week placement as part of my PGCE course.  Having thought that I was reasonably up-to-date with my knowledge of ICT and it’s application in schools, I realised how much new and exciting technology there is available that I didn’t previously know about, and how this can really enhance learning for both children and adults.
