What’s hot, what’s not – and a bit of good news.

The CLC hosted an event for NAACE at the beginning of December which, fortuitously, included a presentation from the organisers of the BETT show on their top tips for a successful BETT visit. Comfy shoes, a plan for the day and a bottle of water were the top three so we heeded their advice and six members of the CLC team visited the show over the course of the four days – in our comfy shoes, with a plan and a bottle of water each.

In terms of equipment, our focus was to look at projection options for schools, 3D printers, robots for KS1,2&3 and tablets/touch screen computers whilst also taking in one or two of the presentations.

Blogging for writing – learning by doing

When asked why they write stories, a ten-year-old replied “I write it for the teacher to mark it.”

This was just one stark discovery made during the research of ‘Blogging and Writing’ by Sarah Horrocks –Director of London Connected Learning Centre and Myra Barrs, previously director of the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education.

It’s been a hectic final few weeks of term as we’ve been trying to get around to meeting with all of our link schools to discuss programmes for next year.  In the midst of this, we’ve had several requests from schools wanting recommendations for inexpensive apps and software to support music teaching.  Having done the work collating our top favourites – we  thought we should publish it to the wider world.

We have long been frustrated by all the complications of managing iPads. Anyone who has jumped through the hoops involved in setting up an Apple VPP account to buy apps, or attempted to distribute apps using Apple Configurator, will be all too familiar with the bittersweet claustrophobia of life inside Apple’s walled garden.

At Lambeth CLC we are always exploring how new technology can support learning across the curriculum. Recently we have been thinking about how iPads can be used to support science investigations and datalogging. The iPad comes with some fantastic science apps (like this heart rate monitor), however we always felt external sensors were required to turn an iPad into a really effective mobile laboratory.

When I was 11 a new teacher arrived at my school. She played the harp and offered to teach anyone who was interested. I jumped at the chance. It was about twice the size of me and I was awful at it. But it inspired a love of classical music, and taught me about practice and perseverance.
