Online Safety: Pupil Voice

Using your school’s online safety policy as a starting point, a CLC film-maker will work with members of school council or your Digital leaders to create a short film to explain  the key content of the policy to the wider school community. The day will combine discussion on good online safety practice, with the afternoon spent creating a short film that can be uploaded tot he school’s website. Computing Unplugged

In this workshop we bring computer science into pupils’ learning environment without the aid of technology. Through a series of engaging activities we show how many of the concepts fundamental to the computing curriculum, such as debugging, decomposition or creating simple algorithms, can be taught using merely the contents of the average classroom.

Having attended this course teachers will...

    • Visit computing teacher Phil Bagge’s website, Code-It, where he shares many of his fantastic lesson ideas
    • Visit Paul Curzon’s computer science website CS4FN, which features a huge number of printable activities covering a massive range of subjects
    • Sign up to Barefoot Computing to gain access to their collection of unplugged lesson plans and resources

Coding and Animation with Scratch Jr

In this workshop pupils get the chance to create their own interactive animation using the visual programming app Scratch Jr.
Scratch Jr is a free app available for iPad and Android tablets. It has been created by MIT to introduce young children to the basic principles of coding through an easy to operate, drag-and-drop interface.

Patterns, Shape & Form in Rocks and Soils

In this workshop pupils make systematic and careful observations to help them describe and compare types of rocks and soils. They will examine textures, colours and shape using digital microscopes, and turn their photos into kaleidoscopic patterns.

    Science: Plants & Natural Things

In this workshop pupils observe, investigate and explore plant life. Examining samples under a microscopic camera, pupils have the chance to take close-up photographs of different parts of common plants and to describe their appearance and function. They then apply their knowledge of the needs plants to choose a location within the CLC for us to place a real living plant.

    Digital Music with Sonic Pi

In this workshop pupils develop an understanding of musical composition and computer science, using the free Sonic Pi software to program a piece of music. Sonic Pi allows pupils to explore the key dimensions of music, from pitch and duration to dynamics and tempo, whilst mastering some of the core logical principles of computing.

Having attended this course teachers will...

    • Deepen your understanding of Sonic Pi with this step-by-step tutorial
    • Try using the Makey Makey to build and program your own instrument with simple circuits
    • Experiment with musical composition and transposition in Scratch, like Miles Berry’s version of Ode To Joy

    Geography & Habitats

This workshop invites pupils to explore different localities and regions using Google Earth, Maps and Street View to gain a deeper understanding of the different types of habitat to which plants and animals have adapted. As well as exploring real world locations they visit simulated environments in Minecraft, using their findings to produce an environmental factfile about different habitats.
